Blog 2: So what actually happens when you work with a Behavior Change Coach?

Say the words "wellness coach" and most people picture the same fuzzy image: someone in workout gear telling you to drink more water and believe in yourself. Maybe showing a whiteboard with "GOALS" written on it. A lot of enthusiasm, not a lot of substance. That is not what the Thadeus Wellness Program is.

Coaching isn't a pep talk. It's a process. And if you're the kind of person who's tried the generic advice — eat well, move more, get 8 hours of sleep — and still ended up stuck, you already know that motivation was never the missing piece. What's actually missing is a structure that adapts to 'your' life instead of asking you to force your life into someone else's plan.

Before getting into what behavior change coaching is, it's worth clearing up what it isn't. It's not a nutritionist handing you a meal plan. It's not a trainer counting your reps. It's not someone checking in once a month to ask, "how's it going?" and hoping the answer is good.

Behavior change coaching is built around one idea: habits don't change because you know what to do. They change because you build a repeatable process for doing it — one that accounts for your schedule, your setbacks, and the specific "rhinos" standing in your way (if you haven't met the rhinos yet go back and read Blog #1 https://thadeuswellness.com/t-blog/why-willpower-doesn’t-work).

The Thadeus Program runs as a 12-week, one-to-one engagement, broken into four 3-week phases. Every phase has a job to do:

1. Baseline & Mindset. Before the behavior program begins, we figure out where you actually stand — not where you think you should be. This phase is about building honest awareness of your current health and happiness, naming what you actually want from the program, and being clear-eyed about what has worked for you before and what hasn't. No generic starting line. Just your starting line.

2. Behavior Change. This is the core of the work — where the actual habits get built, tested, and adjusted in real time. Nothing here is set-and-forget. If a strategy isn't working by week two, we don't wait until week eleven to notice.

3. Seeing Is Believing. Somewhere around the midpoint, something shifts. This phase is about recognizing the progress that's already happening — often before you would otherwise give yourself credit for it — and using that shift in self-perception to build real momentum.

4. Mindfulness & Success. The last phase isn't a victory lap. It's where we build the tools that make the changes stick after the program ends — sustainability strategies, not just short-term wins.

So what does a session actually look like. Every week, we meet — by Zoom or phone, your choice. These aren't check-the-box calls. A typical session might include:

  • Reviewing what actually happened that week versus what was planned,

without judgment

  • Identifying which "rhino" showed up and got in the way

  • Adjusting the plan for the week ahead based on real data, not guesswork

  • Naming one small, specific action to include — not a vague intention

That last point matters more than it sounds. Generic wellness advice tends to hand you a big goal and leave you to figure out the middle. Coaching lives entirely in that middle — the unglamorous, week-to-week work of actually getting from where you are to where you want to be.

Why this works when willpower alone doesn't.

If you have read the first post in this series, you already know the theory: willpower runs out, and habits built on willpower alone tend to collapse the moment life gets busy or stressful. Coaching works differently because it isn't asking you to rely on discipline in a vacuum. It's building a system around you — one with accountability, adjustment, and a person in your corner who's walked this path before. I know it works because I've lived it, not just coached it.

If you are curious what this would look like for you. The best way to understand coaching isn't to read about it — it's to talk through what your specific rhinos look like and what a personalized plan could actually involve. That's exactly what the free ust a real conversation about where you're stuck and whether this program is the right fit.
